WHY PASSIVE JOB-SEEKING IS IMPORTANT?

Reflecting on a recent conversation with a client, who had told me a year back that she loves her job so much that she would never consider leaving and therefore did not prepare even for the unknown.

She did, however, recently call me quite frantically, stating that her employer has been acquired by another company and is reorganizing their structure and letting her go.

The business world is unpredictable making companies behave in unexpected ways. Management can change, employee responsibilities can be changed. Your old boss could be replaced by a new one who isn’t as pleasant to work for as your old one. A change in personal circumstances can result in job loss as well.

It’s a good idea to engage in a passive job search even if you’re content with your current position and upskill to stay competitive.

Here are a few pointers to help you become an expert passive jobseeker:

⏏️Build a career network & be active on platforms like LinkedIn & other industry forums.

⏏️Stay tuned-in with your academic and ex-company alumni groups.

⏏️Browse job postings to understand what the latest requirements for your role are.

⏏️Be interview-ready with both technical and commercial & functional knowledge.

⏏️Keep your career communication documents i.e., resume, LinkedIn & cover letter updated

By investing a little time in being job-hunt-ready, passive job seekers can save a lot of time (and stress) when it comes time to take the job search seriously.
