WHAT & WHY OF RESUME LENGTH

A resume is meant to market you & entice recruiters to call you. A long resume indicates that you don’t know how to position yourself strategically for the next job & recruiters will easily recognize unnecessary fluff /adjectives/adverbs in it.

Hiring is more about your attitude than your accomplishments & it is not a purely meritocratic system. Job-seeking is a relationship business, so feed recruiters just enough so they will want to talk to you in person.

A resume should be easy-to-read with only relevant information, helping recruiters make an instant decision about you.

➡️USE A ONE PAGE RESUME IF:
You recently graduated & since you don’t have much work experience to reference, your CV can feature classwork, school projects, volunteer work, and relevant advanced courses or extracurriculars. More than one page will be difficult to fill, so you’re better off sticking to one page.
You have less than 5 years of work experience: If you are applying for a similar position to the one you currently hold, keep your CV to one page. Include relevant work experience or credentials, and exclude anything that is not related.
You are in a career transitory stage and re-routing your career path, so keep your CV to one page.. For instance, if you have worked as a clerk for five years, and now you are applying for a job in customer service, your clerical experience doesn’t matter as much. In this case, write a solid one-page CV featuring your service experience and transferable skills.
➡️CONSIDER 1.5 TO 2 PAGES IF:
You are (or were) an outstanding student and have many relevant awards, honors, projects, or work experiences that cannot fit on just one page, then two pages are acceptable.
You have more than five years of work experience. As experienced professionals with many years of experience, you will find it difficult to restrict your resume to a single page. Therefore, two pages will be needed.
➡️3 PAGES OR MORE IF:
Your profession requires a CV instead of a resume. A CV is always longer than a resume. If you are a researcher, doctor, professor, or another profession requiring many certificates and licenses, it is appropriate for your CV to be three pages or more. As long as you remember to list only the necessary facts, your CV can be as long as it needs to be in order to cover all of your experience.
You are employed by or applying for a job with the government. Governments tend to be rigid and bureaucratic. Include all information you deem necessary to meet the requirements. This will likely require your CV to be three or more pages long.
