DECODING JOB POSTING TO CUSTOMISE YOUR RESUME

A job posting is usually structured as below:

?Job Title – Understand that job titles are fluid and their meanings differ. Different companies may have different titles for positions that have similar responsibilities so do not base your judgment on the job title alone. Beware that some job titles are misleading, as some companies treat job titles like clickbait. Even so, don’t dismiss a job description for its title alone. The title is merely an introduction. In order to fully comprehend a JD, you need to read on.

? The Company – If you are applying, it is important to read about the company’s culture. Find buzzwords such as “fast-paced” or “team-oriented.” Make sure your values, skills, and work habits fit the environment. This will help you in your cover letter and interview. You can demonstrate that you have researched the company ahead of time and indicate how you fit into the role and the company.

?The Role – It is here that the JD lists the specific type of employee the company seeks. The requirements include education, prior job experience, work portfolios, and past accomplishments. Remember JDs usually list requirements in order of importance. As a thumb rule, you must match the first 3-4 requirements. Try to match the years of experience range.

?Job Responsibilities – Outlines what is expected of you in the position. See if the responsibilities are described in general terms or in specific terms. Identify the keywords or buzzwords and include them in your cover letter and resume application.

?Mandatory and/or Preferred qualifications, skills & experience – They should be listed in order of preference. Look for keywords like required, mandatory, or basic vs. preferred, good to have, etc. Again you should match all the mandatory skills and don’t worry if you don’t match all the preferred skills. Remember, the most important thing to do is to be able to make a case for yourself when you apply.

? Other details – Compensation, benefits, location, reporting hierarchy, job level, job type, etc. – Sometimes a compensation amount or range is given. Benefits will be listed, location, type of job whether permanent or on contract, etc. Remember to read through and understand your fitment.
