SUCCESSFUL RESUMES HAVE A COMPELLING STORY TO TELL

The art of storytelling is essential to your career, whether you’re branding yourself, interviewing, selling, or leading others.

You tell the company a story about why you should be hired when you’re interviewing with them. As a leader, you’re telling your team a story about why they should care about the project. Storytelling is the art of persuasion. Your resume is a marketing document and should also tell a story. But how do you do that? Here are a few tips:

?Ensure you have hard data to back up your claims. Effective stories are not based on biased opinions. They rely on hard data. Using hard numbers and quantifying the accomplishments on your resume is also something I recommend to my clients.

?Identify your target audience. Adapt your story to the audience. Determine whom you need to persuade, what their goals are, and tailor your messaging to fit their needs. A targeted resume will help you with this.

?Emphasize the key points. Be specific. Repeat yourself. Tell them again. It’s important to stress your most important point because people don’t listen nor remember. This is repeating keywords on your resume comes into play.

?Make it simple. Having a clear overarching message and sticking to it is important because people have short attention spans. Keep your resume simple and clean with short and easy-to-read sentences.
