LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional networking platform and also one of the most influential social networks, with millions of members worldwide and that’s a lot of potential contacts.
Yet most LinkedIn profiles are mediocre because they have only basic information like a photo, a headline, and a few work experiences. LinkedIn may even give you an ‘All-Star’ rating, but that does not mean your profile is optimised and effective at advancing your career.
Let’s look at a few ways you can improve your profile to generate more results. LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for building a personal brand, finding a job, finding new customers, or getting recruiters to find you, but only if you use it properly. Here are some pointers:
🤝Fill out your profile completely but keep in mind to include all the keywords that recruiters are using in their job postings and keywords relevant to your industry and sector.
🤝 Stay up to date with your industry sector trends and update your profile with those words, or sentences. You can even share these trends as content for consumption.
🤝Customise your profile URL. Having a more professional, clean, name-only URL is much easier to find, read, and share. Best is to use first name and last name with your professional keyword. (e.g., see my profile’s URL)
🤝Add keywords to your headline and with your job title. Remember to add keywords from the job you want, not the job you have right now.
🤝Use the right tense, your previous experience is not your current experience. If you look at my profile, you’ll see how I describe my past experience.
🤝Add statements that are outcome-oriented, and metrics infused. Use an active voice with power words or action verbs.
🤝Change your settings to an open profile and remember not to lock or make your profile private if you want maximum exposure.
🤝Give and receive recommendations and endorsements, they not only act as testimonials that emphasize your professional abilities, but the skills section also teaches LinkedIn about your skill sets and thereby helps it in ranking your profile up when searched for.
🤝Finally start talking to your connections and start sharing content for more visibility and networking.
