A RESUME TIP SERIES TO STAND OUT TO RECRUITERS – PART 1/5

The standards for what your resume, cover letter, or application form needs to include are set very high in today’s competitive job market. It’s not enough to just have skills and experience; everyone else may have similar skills and experience and may even be willing to take a lower salary.

How can you make your application documents stand out to beat the stiff competition and increase your chances of being shortlisted? You can add value to your career communication documents by:

❣️INCLUDING PASSION AND PURPOSE ❣️

Many applicants make the mistake of strictly factual listing their skills, education, and experience.

Recruiters are sifting through similar resumes daily & ultimately; they need to decipher which ones seem like the closest fit or most deserving of the role. One way to showcase this is by showcasing your passion and purpose for your work, the employer or organizational vision, or even the industry sector you are with.

It might only need to be a sentence or a paragraph that packs a punch of passion and purpose, but it helps to provide more insight into your unique contribution to the role.

How do you do this:

❣️Instead of telling the hiring manager how great you would be, show them. Identify a key requirement of the job description and provide a quantifiable example of a time you’ve handled something similar in the past.

❣️Use your cover letter’s real estate to tell a part of your story that is weaved to match your passion and excitement towards the target role.

❣️Use power verbs, do your research, speak to past employees, highlight your relevance to the role achievements, and reiterate your interest in your cover letter.

❣️Finally leave a professional social media footprint, preferably through content shared in your LinkedIn posts.
