When you are searching for a job, you identify a few good matches, and you start tailoring your resume to apply. After you spend time tweaking your resume, you send it in. What happens next is that it gets placed in a pile, and then a recruiter fi will spend an average of 6-10 seconds scanning it for fitment.
Those six to ten seconds are all you have for your resume to make an impact and create a lasting impression and you should definitely make those seconds count.
What are recruiters looking for?
Recruiters have set parameters to match your resume with it may be skills sets, minimum or maximum years of experience, sector, role, level, job title, education, certifications, or even the fact that are you a job hopper, your location, team management, client management or your steady career progression.
Whatever they are looking for do not forget that recruiters are sifting through a lot of applications and need to be able to quickly scan your resume and find the information they need.
Therefore, it is imperative that your resume is clear, crisp, and concise. By making relevant information easy to find and read, you’ll avoid wasting time. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
?Make the resume design and structure work for you – Aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching makes the first impression. Use correct margins, font size and right colours.
?Prioritise sections hierarchy- Ideally, the most important information should appear first on the resume, and the least important information last. Know what the recruiter is seeking and make sure those skills and assets are clear and visible near the top.
?Eye for detail – It is said that the devil is in the details for a reason. It is the small details that can make or break a resume. Good design is ruined by poor grammar, and excellent wording is obscured by unorganized information.
