USE THE C-A-R FORMULA TO MARKET YOUR ABILITIES ON YOUR RESUME

A resume based on a job description with responsibilities or job tasks may give the reviewer an understanding of your job responsibilities, but it won’t market you to your potential employer. This, instead, positions you as a commodity, as are many other candidates who have similar skills and similar roles.

Use the following C-A-R formula for each position you held to establish your uniqueness and gain consideration: C = Challenge (think of a challenge you faced or problem you had to resolve)

A = Action (what action did you take?)

R = Results (what was the result of the action you took? What was the value you added to the company?)

To portray more credibility of your achievements and the extent of your efforts, quantify your results whenever possible.

For example, compare these two statements to see which one is more impactful & precisely covey’s value.

?️Responsible for reducing downtime costs in the manufacturing production line to increase profit

?️Championed profits of xx% over 3 years with savings of $xx by cutting downtime by xx hrs.

Taking a critical look at your achievements can help you both select the most relevant accomplishments and quantify the outcome of those accomplishments, thus providing the reader with ‘What’s In It For Me’ (W-I-I-F-M) results that will catch their attention.

Using the C-A-R formula yields a more-compelling resume content:

❎Instead of: Researched marketing strategies.

✅Try: Raised the return on investment by 20% with marketing campaigns.

❎Instead of: Worked on website frontend checkout process.

✅Try: Increased the sales-per-click numbers by 20% with better user experience during checkout.

❎Instead of: Conducted new market analysis.

✅Try: Found 10 new markets for our products in xx regions

Using the C-A-R formula will help you structure your resume so that it features a consistent pattern of high-value benefits to the prospective employer showing them what you can do for them.

Using this formula, even if the reader plans on spending only 10–30 seconds reading your resume, guarantees key takeaways or prime benefits to the employer, garnering immediate positive attention, so you can be screened in rather than screened out.
