THE 80/20 RULE WHILE BUILDING YOUR RESUME AND APPLYING TO JOBS

STEP 1 is identifying your end goal or target job in terms of timing, location, culture, compensation, role, etc. whatever is of prime importance and priority for you at your stage of life.

Almost every industry and business follow the 80/20 rule, so the business and daily efforts of job hunting should be no different. The Pareto principle, or the “law of the vital few”, has driven critical decisions for decades. If you’re a fan of the 20/80 rule then listen closely to these pointers:

🎯 In searching for your next job, it is time to realize that times have changed and therefore job seekers must also change their olden times of applying and consider resume rebranding if they don’t want to fall into an endless black hole of job applications.

🎯Focusing 20% on job fit & timing will generate about 80% of your results during the job-seeking process.

🎯 One of the many keys to finding a job and landing an interview is being extremely selective in which jobs you apply for and how quickly you apply after the job has been posted.

🎯 Majority of applicants give themselves the benefit of the doubt when applying. A large majority are either too junior or have not read the job description carefully enough hence companies adopt Applicant Tracing Systems (ATS) to weed out irrelevant applicants.

🎯 Because people tend to apply for roles for which they may not be a great fit, many recruiters loathe searching through application pools and would rather source passive candidates online, contact referrals, or use keywords to find people on LinkedIn or other job sites.

🎯  The best and most sought after candidates have a very good sense of what their strengths and weaknesses are, and will actually turn down opportunities if they sense a mismatch in a position that’s been offered.

🎯  By preparing and putting yourself out there, you are showing your dedication and drive to make your next company succeed.

🎯  By expanding who you know, you are sharing your skills directly, and maybe, just maybe, that next role will be created for you, and you’ll bypass that dreaded black hole.

🎯 Remember 80% of the jobs are now filled by who you know, who you meet, and who they know. Only 20% at best are filled the old fashion way.

🎯 Be prepared and be patient, but being patient does not mean waiting for the right opportunities to come your way. You should have an optimized LinkedIn profile where recruiters can reach out to you every day but only apply to positions that are a great fit.
