Having spent a significant amount of time creating your resume, the final step to submitting your application is to hit save and submit it. Despite this, there are still too many professionals who fail to cross this final hurdle.
➡️BAD FILE NAME
It’s very important to remember that your resume filename will be visible to recruiters when you attach it to an email or application. Therefore, you need to ensure that it always looks professional. In addition, it is critical that the resume is clearly labelled with your full name, so the hiring manager knows whose resume they are handling, and so they can easily find it during a database search.
Resumes that have names like ‘My resume – version 1’, ‘CV 2022’, ‘akresume-3rd draft’, ‘SLresume-finalfor HR’, etc. is not the most effective way to make an impact with a potential employer.
It is not only clumsy, but it can also be construed as an indication that you are applying for multiple types of jobs at the same time, which indicates a lack of dedication to this specific role & company.
➡️ BAD FILE TYPE
Keep away from online resume builders/templates that output resumes as images and avoid applying with scanned documents. Use only MS Word as a plain text file (.dox) converted to PDF.
This is important because an ATS is unable to read and parse any other processing templates, especially the online fancy templates that come out as a picture (jpeg, png, jfif,) or even PowerPoint presentations.
A bad file name and/or a bad file type can not only be unprofessional, and it could cause your resume to be discarded before it’s even opened or end up unsearchable.
