STOP AMBUSHING & START NETWORKING IN YOUR JOB PURSUIT!

Finding a job without a strategy can be frustrating, especially if you don’t receive a response from your professional network. Job seekers often make the mistake of forcing their resumes on strangers even before making the effort to build a rapport and get to know them. the company or the job role.

Let’s reverse the role here to say you are working for company A, and company A has several positions open. Company A also has an internal referral program so that you refer your friends and acquaintances to fill these positions. And you come across these 2 scenarios:

?Scenario 1 – A stranger B sent you their resume and asked you for a job or to refer.

?Scenario 2 – A stranger C approached you with a keen interest in your company and/or role. They conversed about how they could benefit your company and sought your guidance on their fitment.

Wouldn’t you be in a better position to refer and recommend Stranger C, rather than Stranger B?

Think about how you would feel if some stranger shoved their resume at you, telling you to give it to your manager. Do you think you know them enough to even refer them?

Job seekers, it’s time to stop sending resumes without knowing your audience or the job role.

Rather if you chance on a contact or find a great connection on LinkedIn or elsewhere, look for ways to build a relationship before you ask for a job.

?How about –  “Hi xx, we are both members of the xx group here on LinkedIn. I notice that you’re an analyst with xx Pvt Ltd. I’m a research analyst, too, and I’ve heard great things about your firm. May I ask you a few quick questions about your role?” ?

This is a small, but important change that can open the door to more possibilities and reduce your fatigue of not getting a response. If you don’t address the source of fatigue, you’ll soon lose interest and motivation in your job search.
