SHARPEN YOUR RESUME, COVER LETTER AND LINKEDIN PROFILE ALIKE

Now that we have crossed STEP1 & 2 of identifying your target job & interviewing yourself to check your fitment as detailed in my last two posts. Let’s move on to STEP 3 is sharpening & targeting while editing your Career Communication Documents that include your Resume, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn Profile.

Here is how you do it:

🎯 Read the job posting carefully and note down the mandatory skills and preferred skills along with the exact key phrases.

🎯 Use free applications available that can help you pull out keywords from job descriptions.

🎯 Next stuff your resume with accomplishments using those keywords or synonyms of those keywords.

🎯 Understand the difference between hard skills, technical, tools &methodologies & soft skills.

🎯 While hard skills, technical, tools, & methodologies can be listed, avoid listing soft skills instead demonstrate them in a statement.

🎯 Put targeted accomplishments in your resume summary, experience, education, and other key resume sections.

🎯 Use a targeted tagline or headline that matches exactly what the Job posting’s title is.

🎯 Remember to take off irrelevant and unnecessary information that the role is not seeking from your documents.

🎯 Finally, a targeted resume must be tailored for the ATS.

🎯 Tailoring doesn’t only mean on your resume, of course, do it for your cover letter as well.

🎯 Find out what types of people the company hires, for example, are they mostly business, or do they enjoy sports and fun, and include those aspects in your cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

🎯 See how your work ethic aligns with the company’s culture page, if there is one, and demonstrate that in your cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

🎯 No one likes to get emails that say “to whom it may concern”, personalize your cover letter to the hiring manager or recruiter.

🎯 Don’t copy-paste your resume on your cover letter or LI, these 2 docs should expand upon your resume, focusing on your specific skills and experiences that relate to the job.

🎯 Drop the name of someone who referred you on your cover letter.

🎯 Spotlight a particular part of your resume that matches the role requirements of the employer on your cover letter.

🎯 Point out how your past experience prepared you for the new job on your cover letter.

🎯 Don’t forget to express your interest, enthusiasm, and gratitude in your cover letter.
