It’s always been the employer’s market, the sheer number of applications that flow in for a single position is raising by the day. Companies have thus, evolved and got smarter by including Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to weed out and shortlist relevant resumes
Therefore, knowing how to create a resume that gets past the ATS is vital because, even if you are an aptly qualified/experienced applicant for the job, your resume will not be considered if it fails to get past the ATS filters.
The ATS filters and ranks applicants according to their suitability for the job, hence preparing a resume that gets the consideration it deserves is essential, and here are a few ways you can do it:
🤖 Only apply to roles you are qualified and experienced for, stop chasing the number of applications & focus on the quality of applications
🤖 Keep it simple textual as the ATS struggles to read graphics, images, fancy fonts, special characters, etc.
🤖 Use MS word and convert it to PDF, while applying because an ATS does not parse any other processing templates, especially the online fancy templates that come out as a picture (jpeg, png)
🤖 Use regular standard headings on your resume, and group relevant information to enable ease of reading.
🤖 Use the industry-relevant resume keywords from the JD and incorporate them across your resume.
🤖 Include job-specific terminology in full form and do not use abbreviations.
🤖 Don’t just list out your keywords but explain the context in which you have used them.
🤖 Remember that cover letters are also scanned along with the resume and the content of both is used for ranking your profile.
🤖 Try to always stick to a traditional resume format using the reverse chronological order as that is universally accepted.
🤖 Use a regular, popular and professional font for ATS scanning such as Arial, TNR, Calibri etc.
🤖 Avoid spelling and grammar errors as your resume will not get parsed.
