HOW TO DESCRIBE LANGUAGE SKILLS ON A RESUME

How to describe language skills on a resume? In continuation with my last post which explained 3 things:

(link to my last post is in the comment below)

➡️Now let’s dig in and find out what is the most effective way to describe your language skill level on your resume to attract potential recruiters:

Including your language skills on your resume is pointless without describing the level of proficiency, so pick a level for each language you know and some other highlights as below:

🛎️Elementary / Basic – Can be used if you’re starting to learn a new language and you can understand & have basic conversations.

🛎️Limited Working / Intermediate – Can be used when you can hold meaningful & lengthy conversations and have adequate reading proficiency.

🛎️Full Proficiency – Can be used if you have the ability to speak, write, and read without difficulty. However, colloquialisms and native speakers may be difficult to understand.

🛎️Native – Can be used when you have grown up speaking this language and it comes naturally to you.

🛎️Bilingual – To emphasize your language proficiency, add the word “Bilingual” .

🛎️Foreign Language – If you are learning a foreign language or have already learned one, mention the level you are at. For example, German (B1)
