Get Past Resume Screening Filters!

Artificial intelligence has long since been disrupting numerous industries including helping potential employers screen out the least relevant candidates and schedule interviews with the good ones—saving them valuable time & effort and eliminating manual bias & errors.

While it may sometimes seem unfair to candidates but because of its numerous benefits, the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) market size is expected to grow leaps and bounds (try googling it). ATS is gaining massive adoption across enterprises including the government.

Here are some tips that will help your resume get past these bots!

?Use a simple word format that is converted to PDF because an ATS cannot read images and rarely the PDFs that come from online templates.

?An ATS will scan resumes from left to right. Hence if you use columns keep the flow left to right.

?A traditional horizontal format with text spread out and simplified in bullet points.

?Use the right industry-relevant keywords and their synonyms as the ATS is programmed to filter using these words. (e.g., Speaking skills vs Communication skills).

?Don’t forget to carefully place years of experience / level, location, sector and skills as this forms the key parameters while filtering. (e.g.: if JD asks for 5-8 years and you have 10 years or 3 years then your resume is quickly moved to the bottom of the pile).

?Read the JD and tailor/highlight your skills that match their requirement. However, you shouldn’t go overboard and simply copy and paste everything from the job description. That would lead to rejection at a later stage when it is read by a human.

Remember that an effective resume is the first step to your job search success.
