Here is a recent conversation I had with a client:
🚀Client: My career path has not been so straight forward, I have moved from sales to key accounts to project management.
Me: Yes and your resume also presents a zig-zag career path making you look unstable and a risky candidate to employers.
🚀Client: But once I get an interview I will explain it to them clearly and eliminate all their doubts.
Me: But, without a focused resume you won’t get the chance to interview and present your best side. Don’t expect employers to understand why you moved so many roles. They won’t see the value in your breadth of skills.
You need a few resume strategies:
- Use a Functional Resume Format.
- Emphasize on transferable skills.
- Identify relevant areas to the target job & write.
- Strategise, prioritise and restructure impact to the new role
- Show career progression irrespective of the varied roles
- Show linkages with story telling on your cover letter
- Create clarity with a justified summary & flow
- Focus on wider themes of past career
- Go beyond the job titles & write about the role
- Reorganise by grouping work similar work history.
