Country-Specific Resume Requirements Series – The UK!

Called – CV

Writing Style – Plain & Formal

Length – The recommended length for a UK CV is two pages. If it does overflow onto three pages, this isn’t too much of a problem, but try to avoid having only one or two lines on the final page as this looks messy.

Personal Details – Share personal information such as your hobbies and interests, to convey your personality. Details such as your age or marital status are not required.

Start with –Work experience or internship experience comes first.

Include your Picture – No (due to the strict privacy laws and anti-discrimination laws)

Language – British English and avoid using US spellings or words

Order – Reverse Chronological

Font & Style – Calibri, Arial, Cambria, Times New Roman, size 11, with bolding, caps and italics.

Other Details – Provide information on all relevant work experience and outline your key responsibilities and achievements for each position in a small paragraph or list of bullet points that are easy to read. Make sure you include the name of the employer, their location, your job title, and the dates that you were employed. Keep a references sheet separately and not as a part of the CV. It is also important to make sure that you use the appropriate phrases. For example, in the UK an unpaid internship is referred to as ‘work experience’ and what Americans might call school is referred to as ‘university’ or ‘college’.
