CONSIDER BOTH HARD & SOFT SKILLS FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT!

Recently a client said “Shilpa, I am not getting through promotions or new opportunities, even though I have the required experience, qualification and the latest certfications, where am I going wrong here”

When we investigated the further, it dawned upon us that while my client was ace at his work, he was simply lacking soft skills that  made him a good team player and efficient manager. Soft skills help you fully utilize your hard skills. Skills such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, time management, working well under pressure are critical in the workplace.

Remember, HARD SKILLS help you get hired; SOFT SKILLS help you get promoted.

Here are some basic soft skills that you may adapt and build:

?Communication – Listen carefully without interrupting, use a positive tone of voice & watch your body language.

?Persuasion – Knowing your audience, creating stories that resonate & communicating in a concise yet effective way.

?Negotiation – Listen carefully, try to understand your counterpart’s perspective, then come up with a solution that will benefit both parties.

?Relationship Building – Provide unconditional help to others, seek common interests, and ask for help before expecting anything in return.

?Empathy- Show genuine interest in others, consider things from their perspective, acknowledge their feelings, and always be supportive & helpful.

?Positive Attitude – Never gossip, complain, criticize sparingly, and always speak well of others.

?Teamwork –  Avoid claiming all the credit, celebrate other people’s wins, praise teammates publicly and praise them generously.

?Conflict Resolution – Avoid arguments and accusations, focus on solutions over problems & apologize unconditionally when it’s your fault.

?Emotional Intelligence – Don’t act impulsively, when you’re upset, take a step back, understand what you’re feeling, and understand the consequences of your actions before you act.

?Time Management – Learn to prioritize, to delegate, to say no.

?Work Ethic- Be responsible for your work, show up on time, keep your commitments, and don’t blame others.
