Applying principles of Ethos, Pathos & Logos to your Résumé!

Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, recommended that any spoken or written communication intended to persuade contains three key rhetorical elements: logos, the logic and reasoning in the message; ethos, the character, credibility and trustworthiness of the communicator; and pathos, the emotional dimension.

How can you apply these principles to your Résumé to make it attractive and more persuasive?

?Logos: Aristotle believed the most in the power of logos, which means persuading others using logic, evidence, and facts. By quantifying your impact on your Résumé, you’re doing exactly that. You’re providing evidence to underscore the significance of your accomplishments.

?Ethos: When you’re looking for a new job, you’ll need to persuade many different people throughout the process that you are the best person they can hire. The first step is to always know your audience. Do your research and gather as much information you need about the company and role. Then arrange these bits to showcase your skills to what they want on your Résumé. Social proof is one of the most powerful principles of influence. Display awards, recognition, promotions and emphasizing how coveted your accomplishments are.

?Pathos: Use the storytelling techniques, use common language or phrases and evoke examples of shared experiences that resonate with the reader to establish a connection.
