Writing a one-page competitive resume!

Unless you’re a senior-level professional you don’t need a second page for your resume. But, why only one-page you may ask? Think about a movie trailer or a book reading, only the best scenes are included to create hype and intrigue people to watch the movie or read the book. Similarly, your resume’s sole purpose is to act as a prelude, trailer, or introduction that can pique the interest of potential employers and lead to an interview.

What are your best strategies for making a single-page resume? Particularly if you believe everything on your resume is vital and cannot be deleted. Here are some pointers that will help you create a crisp and clear one-page resume:

??Set a minimum page margin of 0.5”, a minimum font size of 10 /11 and a common font like Calibri or Arial.

??Include your email, contact, location & LinkedIn link in the header with your name.

?? Optimize the line spacing, but make sure it is readable.

?? As we are conditioned to read top to bottom, start with the key details.

?? As we read from left to right, start with action words, and frame your achievements with bullet points.

?? Don’t use acronyms that the recruiter might not know and may have to find out.

??Give credibility to your career story by using numbers/metrics.

??Rather than just stating your awards and recognition, provide context.

??Label the sections with commonly used section names to make navigation easier for recruiters.

??Take stock of everything you do and convert your sentences into crisp accomplishments and results.

??Avoid tables, charts, graphs, timelines, or images as they are not ATS friendly & take up space.

??Consider a two-column resume format that allows for maximum content inclusion.

??Get rid of unnecessary information, like parents’ names, addresses, marital status, etc.

??Make sure you list your competencies so that a recruiter can get a quick snapshot of your skillset.
