WHY YOU SHOULDN’T POST YOUR RESUME PUBLICLY ON LINKEDIN

The last time I posted, I showed you how to add your resume to LinkedIn. You will learn why it’s not a good idea to publish your resume publicly.

A job seeker may think that uploading their resume on a public platform like LinkedIn during the application process will boost their exposure. In addition, most employers still require your resume and after seeing your LinkedIn profile.

However, you might want to reconsider adding your resume to your LinkedIn profile for everyone to see. Here’s why.

? Announcing your job search publicly. Your job search should remain hidden until you receive an offer. Rampant resume postings can turn employers or recruiters off, because one you start looking desperate and second employers or recruiters are known to prefer passive candidates, it’s like playing hard to get. As a recruiter, I’ve witnessed this bias in action for real. Further you will come across as someone who will join even with a salary cut.

? Work Repercussions: It’s not just recruiters who check LinkedIn. So do your boss, his family, friends, and co-workers. An uploaded resume will likely give the impression that you want to change jobs or fields, especially if it emphasizes experience or skills that are distinct from what you currently do. And this may affect your career path negatively.

? Disclosing your personal information publicly: With the Internet, you should be mindful of what it means to get your name & contact details out. The first thing you will experience is more spam & exposure to potential hackers, threats & abuse.

? Its Repetitive. Your LinkedIn profile will already contain the most important information from your resume – and more.

? It’s no longer in your control. You also lose the ability to tailor your resume to a particular role and employer since your resume can now be downloaded and distributed by anyone.

? It will appear that you are unfamiliar with LinkedIn. The site has different purposes than your typical job board. By posting your resume on LinkedIn, you may communicate that you are unfamiliar with the platform.

Finding a job can feel like a numbers game. The more you put yourself out there, the better your chances of getting hired, right? However, being selective about where you post your resume is a good way to maintain privacy & hit the bullseye during a job hunt. Finding a few quality roles to apply to with your tailored resume is much better than canvassing dozens across.

? ?Ultimately, you should focus on creating a LinkedIn profile that shows you in the best possible light. The next post I will write is a Guide to Getting Noticed on LinkedIn. ? ?
