A recent conversation with a client made me realize that a lot of candidates have trouble organizing their resume’s information. Most are unsure of what should be included on a resume, what should be optional, and what should not be included.
I have created this post to address this confusion and give clarity on organising your resume information:
?MANDATORY SECTIONS
Your name, email address, phone number, current location (city, country) & LinkedIn profile link
Dates (mm/yyyy) and locations of work
Education: List university, location, degree, major subjects, date of graduation & GPA
Experience: List organizations, locations, dates, your title, and a brief description of your accomplishments in reverse chronological order.
Skills: List your hard skills including relevant keywords of your desired industry.
Additional Skills: Languages, technical skills, tools
?OPTIONAL SECTION
Summary: Summarize your qualifications: your education, skills, and related experience. Especially if you are switching careers or industries, you must highlight your transferable skills.
Awards & Honors: List Awards, Honors or Scholarships you have received (limit to a few of the most recent or prestigious).
Leadership, Extracurricular Activities, Voluntary Work: Especially useful if you are an entry-level applicant.
Interests, Projects, Accreditations or Licensures, Professional Affiliations, and Publications.
?SECTIONS TO AVOID
Personal information such as age, marital status, or number of children, fathers/mothers name
Repetition of words such as “responsibilities” and “duties included” or “assisted with” before each description
The first person “I” or extensive narrative
List of References or “References Available Upon Request”
Declaration
Salary & Notice Period details
Full Address including house number
More than one phone number or email address
Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
