STORYTELLING RESUMES ARE COMPELLING AND ENGAGING TO THEIR READERS

As a job-seeker you can help the hiring decision-maker by crafting a narrative that grabs the reader. Have you tried it? Here’s what you need to keep in mind while building a Resume that tells a story and transfixes your prospective employers:

?️ Cast – A lot of people keep the focus on themselves as the lead in their story, instead try making the lead as your organisation, projects, boss, clients and/or colleagues.

?️ Plot – While you may say obviously the plot is my organisation, try focusing instead on the projects, division, department, a region or territory, team, client and /or vendors too.

?️ Trailer – This is the extract from the storyline, with skills, twists, turns and challenges you overcame. Use an eye-catching headline/tagline and briefly narrate outcomes in the resume and cover letter.

?️ Storyline – Simply stating an accomplishment alone has very little meaning. Instead, try adding context to the accomplishment by stating the conflict or challenge, which can be an organisational challenge or a people, client, situation, process-related challenge. Highlight the progress you made in each position you have held. You may choose to use bullet points like challenges and outcomes, or how it started and how it ended.

?️ Impact – This is the results or resolution area. A lot of people focus on individual results. Try thinking in terms of the overall strategic impact it had on the organisation for both present and future.
