As a professional resume writer and career coach, I have heard many clients incorrectly believe that a flashy document or graphic resume is necessary to stand out from the crowd.
My sincere advice to all job seekers is to focus on content over images, as simplicity is the most elegant and effective method when it comes to showcasing your impact.
Consider your reader when writing your resume. In these modern times, both humans and machines are likely to parse your resume. Therefore, you will want to optimize your resume so both parties can easily read and understand it.
Two major issues with Graphic / Visual resumes are that the ATS might not be able to read through your resume and a human recruiter may not be able to parse the information and save it in their resume database. So why even take a chance unless you are some sort of a designer and want to show off your skills.
The content of the resume is what potential employers are looking to read. Clean documents that are easy to read should be the focus of your content.
The substance of your resume is valued over style. While a graphic resume may look nice, if nobody gets to see it or if it’s missing that substance then it’s not serving you right.
