Words are powerful!
Using the right language on your résumé and cover letter (and everywhere else) often leads to the right reaction. Use appropriately strategized words, and your prospects (potential employers) will begin to see your abilities. Use the wrong words, and you’ll find it harder to get across.
That’s because the job search process always starts as a linguistic engagement before it becomes a full-blown offer. Good language speeds up the transition. Bad language does the opposite. Very bad language prevents the transition from ever happening.
Hence it’s vital to optimise your résumé and interview vocabulary and here are some pointers:
?Clarity – Avoid using acronyms, legalese, foreign words, industry jargon, unnecessary adjectives, and vague explanations. Leave no room for alternative interpretations.
?Trust – Establish trust by focusing on what your potential employers need and show how you fit into their scheme of things to solve their problems.
?Certainty – Always project confidence and certainty in your resume and other communication. Avoid using statements like possibly, maybe, I am not sure, etc.
?Brevity – It’s good to be thorough, but it’s even better to respect people’s time and be prepared for the interview with everything you have written in the resume.
?Optimism – Nothing saps enthusiasm more than a heavy dose of negativity. Stop bad-mouthing your ex-employers or playing the blame game.
?Focus – Knowing yourself well is good, but knowing the potential employer is even better. Remember this mantra and you’ll thrive in any interview.
