HOW TO WRITE A STRONG PRODUCT MANAGEMENT RESUME

When writing a resume for a product management role, basic resume-writing rules apply plus make sure the resume is “scannable.” Most hiring managers won’t read every word of the resume, so make sure that whatever they do read has industry-relevant keywords. Put key accomplishments, especially quantifiable accomplishments, in bold.

Make sure you emphasize your product management experience on the front page. This can be easily accomplished by putting the Work Experience section in the foreground, which is the most attractive section to employers. On the other hand, if the experience is far from the past, it may have to go on the second page but you can use a tagline/headline or resume summary highlight to focus on product management.

Another thing to consider is that product management is a leadership role so your resume should reflect that. Here are some ways to demonstrate the kind of leadership necessary for successful product management on your resume:

👍Communicate a clear Product Strategy. It requires both the ability to write a product strategy as well as the soft skills necessary to effectively articulate that strategy.

👍Focus on the Market as well as the Product. The development team will not spend much time in person with potential clients, so it’s up to you to do it. By actively engaging and liaising with current and prospective customers, you will become a better and more effective product manager

👍Display the Primary Function as a Product Manager. Understand why your company has a product management process in the first place; typically, they want a representative that is outward-facing and who represents the customer in the development process.

👍Back-up Ideas with Facts. Your products will succeed based on results, not dreams, so build your ideas based on facts, and you will own the room.

👍Make the Management’s job easier. By providing objective advice backed up by facts, good product managers help their bosses and their bosses’ bosses make better decisions. There is no greater sign of leadership potential than reducing your boss’s micromanagement needs.
