HOW TO READ JOB DESCRIPTIONS & TAILOR APPLICATIONS

🗣️ Client: My resume applications have disappeared into the void.

Me: When was the last time you applied?

🗣️ Client: Every day, last night & even a few moments ago.

Me: Let’s put it this way when was the last time you actually read a job posting, thoroughly, absorbing every word & contemplating your fit & spent time tailoring your resume and application?

🗣️Client: Negligible, probably never.

Me: So, you are just glancing at the job description (JD) & applying. This happens when you try to apply for as many openings as possible. This mistake can prolong your job search or cause you to miss out on a potentially lucrative opportunity.

Any role you apply for requires you to show what value you can bring to the company. And a JD is your guide to figure out what an employer needs, so think of it as a cheat sheet. Here are some tips how:

➡️Position title: Match the job title to your career with a headline using the same language.

➡️Company name: Research a company’s culture, growth, financial, and learning perspectives before applying. Learn how a company talks about itself, its values, its growth, and its employees to find out what’s significant to them. Identify how you can add value here and incorporate that into your application.

➡️Location & type of position: Position your application materials based on their location and role, whether they are fully in-office, completely remote, or hybrid, and present your ability to fit in.

➡️Job overview or summary: Make sure you read through this high-level explanation of the position and its responsibilities and ensure you key in similar achievements in your resume summary & cover letter.

➡️Job responsibilities or duties: Convert these to outcome-oriented statements, stating what you did and how it benefited the company.

➡️Mandatory experience & qualifications: This might include your years of experience as well as education, skills, experience, certificates, certifications, physical abilities, security clearance levels, or willingness to submit to a background check. Companies may split this information into multiple sections. Match it exactly to your resume and cover letter.

➡️Preferred, additional, or bonus qualifications: Postings might also list “nice-to-have” qualifications that aren’t mandatory. If you have them highlight them in your application documents.

➡️Application instructions: Finally follow any instructions on how a company would like you to apply with what materials or info to include with your application as closely as you can.
