Employers’ perceptions of gaps in employment have changed over time, and they are beginning to understand that everyone has a different career path and timeline.
Whether it be the pandemic or otherwise, I have seen clients struggle to explain or conceal career gaps in their resume. The dreaded question will inevitably arise.
Imagine how much easier it would be if you addressed this question in your resume beforehand! Below are a few tips you can use:
↪️Be sure to explain the gap instead of just mentioning it and keep your explanation short, clear, and crisp rather than diving into details.
↪️ Your career progression should support your explanation and don’t forget to include the value you gained from that gap in your explanation.
↪️Use a combination of functional and chronological resume format to highlight your skills first.
↪️Ensure that your cover letter mentions your career gap if it is significant.
↪️Prepare a detailed answer for your interview and make sure to emphasize your other achievements to overcome your gap.
↪️Be truthful and avoid irrelevant details.
Include a resume summary or objective in your application that mentions the purpose of your career break and how it set you up for success in your next role. It works best for people who are looking for work directly after a career break. If you have had a steady job since your career break, you can mention it in the experience section of your resume.
