ELIMINATE IRRELEVANT/NOT RECENT/NOT IMPORTANT INFO ON YOUR RESUME

Overdetailing and unnecessary information are two common mistakes found in resumes. Change your approach if you’re prone to referring to your two-week project from 10 years ago. A resume should show relevant experience from the most recent past, something every HR and manager is looking for. So, it’s ok to omit jobs and experiences not thematically relatable to the company you’re applying to.

For some jobs, it’s appropriate and useful to mention extracurricular activities, such as sports, volunteering, or your own business attempts. Nevertheless. It is always a good idea to put yourself in the shoes of someone who would evaluate your resume application. Probably not every experience is worth mentioning in every job application.

If you do want to showcase additional details, consider adding a link to a professional profile on LinkedIn or GitHub (depending on your line of work) to your resume. Think about creating an online portfolio or blog that is mobile-responsive so employers can access your site on any device if you work in the creative field. You should not include on your resume social media accounts that host unprofessional content, do not support your current career goals, and are not regularly updated. If you’re going to include a URL to your social media account, make sure it reflects your personal brand and demonstrates why you’re qualified for the position.

Avoid unnecessary personal information on a resume such as your gender, marital status, nationality, parents name, or religious beliefs. In fact, employers don’t ask for these personal details on resumes. If you’re unsure whether to include a detail about yourself on your resume, consider if the information is relevant to the job you’re targeting. If it doesn’t demonstrate your qualifications for the role, it doesn’t belong on your resume.

Your goal is for the recruiter to spend their time on your most significant relevant experiences.
