CUSTOMISE JOB TITLES ON YOUR RESUME TO STAND OUT & FIT IN

Despite how daunting it may seem, standing out from all of the other applicants is indeed part of the job-search process. If keywords aren’t matched, applicant tracking systems will rank your resume low, pushing it to the bottom of the pile. Even human resume reviewers spend only a few seconds evaluating how you fit the job role and more so it is vital to match keywords that they are looking for.

I have heard clients tell me that they have the skills & experience but are still not getting calls. How about matching the exact job title to stand out and fit in.

Even within the same industry, there is no standard list of job titles. So what should you do if the job title you are applying to doesn’t match your previous positions? Consider customising your job title, but do it carefully. Here are situations where it is okay to change:

?If the job roles are matching but not the title, go ahead and match the job title.

?If the target job title and your previous job title generally mean the same thing ( e.g. supervisor/manager, associate/ executive, business functional analyst vs business analyst or customer service manager vs customer care manager, etc)

?If you have a very specialised job title that the general job market doesn’t understand, use the commonly accepted job title.

?If your role has evolved and you have taken up higher responsibilities but your job title hasn’t changed.

?You can highlight the team or function you worked with for better understanding and sometimes if it is confusing it is okay to use both the job titles for the sake of clarity.

?You can use a resume tag line or a resume title that matches the target job title.

? ? Do highlight this change during the interview. Reference checkers are unlikely to be bothered by a small detail you changed for the sake of clarity ? ?
