When you apply for a job, your resume is filtered at several levels. Some of the generic first-level filters include years of experience, location, industry, role, education, and certifications.
All of these should clearly be visible and grouped under well-defined sections in your resume.
A human or software should be able to skim through your resume without confusion and spot the relevant first-level filters at first glance.
Once this is cleared, it is then that your resume will be moved to the next level to be read further.
When a resume reaches the hands of a potential employer (or computer screen these days), it’s only scanned for a few mere seconds. If your resume has long paragraphs or unorganized information, this can take away from those crucial seconds that determine whether or not it will be kept. Remember to align dates and numbers in the same format across the resume, as with highlighting and bolding where required.
