Here’s a recent conversation I had with a client that inspired me to write this post to benefit all:
🗣️Client: I saw a recent viral video on ATS Hack, and I need your advice.
Me: A hack sounds like a shady shortcut that I never endorse, anyway tell me about it.
🗣️Client: It said that I could copy & paste the entire JD into my resume in some corner or bottom, reduce to font size 1 and change the font colour to white.
Me: 😱😨 You just can’t cheat a system this way. The system is programmed to parse the text and it will be revealed.
🗣️Client: It doesn’t matter as long I clear the first step, right?
Me: This will only signal the recruiter that you have zero integrity.
🗣️Client: 😌🥴 What should I do
Me: Play it smart but in the right way here are some do’s and don’ts:
✅Keep it a simple textual resume, as the ATS struggles to read graphics, images, fancy fonts, special characters, etc.
✅ Use MS word & convert it to PDF, while applying. ATS does not parse any other processing or online templates.
✅ Use the CAR method (challenge, action & results) to write your statements and quantify your achievements.
✅ Use regular standard resume section headings, and group relevant information to enable ease of reading.
✅ Incorporate the industry-relevant resume keywords that you analysed from the JD.
✅ Include job-specific terminology in full form and do not use abbreviations.
✅ Cover Letters are also scanned along with the CV and the content of both is used for ranking your profile.
