I’ve spent close to 10 years recruiting at large IT, ITES, Pharma, and Consulting companies and I’ve compiled some of the common reasons candidates are rejected.
From a different perspective, here’s what you might be doing wrong without even realizing it:
➡️Poor attitude: Poor attitude & arrogance are the leading reasons for rejection. Employers can afford to be self-centered, but you cannot.
➡️Appearance: Three to five minutes are enough for first impressions. Make sure you review your appearance checklist. With a shabby appearance, you lack both presentability and personality.
➡️Lack of research: Interviewers can tell if you have not researched the job, company, or industry before the interview. Check out the company on the internet and talk to friends, colleagues, and former employees.
➡️Not asking well-informed relevant questions: Your genuine interest in the company and the position is evident when you ask questions. Make a list of intelligent & relevant questions in advance.
➡️Getting stuck on tricky questions: Anticipate answers to tough & tricky questions. It will help you to formulate intelligent responses if you rehearse with someone before the interview.
➡️Reading from your resume: When you are able to engage in intelligent dialogue without referring to your resume during the interview, you will be viewed as a reliable, responsive team player.
➡️Humility gone too far: Being conditioned not to brag makes it difficult to describe your accomplishments cleverly. You can demonstrate what you can do for them by explaining how you achieved difficult goals.
➡️Not matching your skills with employer needs: Most often, you talk about everything you’ve done rather than what skills are relevant to the next job role and how those skills will help the next company.
➡️Talking about salary too soon: If you believe an employer is interested, you may ask for inappropriate amounts, and if you feel undervalued or desperate, you may ask for too little. Let’s leave this discussion for last.
➡️Unsure career path: If you don’t have clear career goals, you can’t spot the right opportunities or commit to them and end up wasting everyone’s time.
➡️Job shopping: If you’re in high demand, you might say you’re just looking for opportunities and are happy where you are. Wastes time and hurts your chances with employers in the future.
