DITCH USING A GENERIC RESUME

Sending applications blindly without reading the entire job description is an evident oversight you must avoid. When you are applying for multiple job posts, a generic resume is useful, but it doesn’t set you apart from Tom, Dick or Harry who are also applying.

Generic resumes are simply a quick way to make future employers reject you. If you have to apply for many jobs, try tailoring your resume to each company you are applying to. Recruiters should not be left wondering or guessing why you are applying to this company, organization, or industry after reading your resume. How do you do that? Here are a few exercises to try:

↪️ Use the resume language in a way that demonstrates your genuine interest in the job.
↪️Before applying take a minute to reflect on what it was about this job that made you want to apply in the first place?
↪️Why do you think you are such a good fit?
↪️Was there a specific part of the role that excited you?
↪️Does the company’s mission particularly resonate with yours?
↪️Research the company and industry to help you articulate further.
↪️Once you are clear on your reasons for applying, work on customizing your summary, expertise areas, keywords and cover letter.
↪️Look back at some of the research you’ve done, and weave this in.
↪️Demonstrating that you’ve made the effort to do your homework at this early stage will apply positive reinforcement in the recruiter’s mind
