WHEN IS A CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME APPROPRIATE AND WHEN IS IT NOT?

Among the various formats of resumes, we have the functional format, the combination format, and finally, the chronological format, which is one of the most popular formats since employers and applicant tracking systems find it easy to scan.

It will include a resume summary, which is essentially your introductory pitch before listing your work history in order of date, with your most recent work experience listed at the top. It is easier to compile since its dependency on dates helps you nail down the details of your job history.

A chronological format helps when:

🏵You have several years of experience in one field of work and are seeking growth in that career path.

🏵You have worked in one industry or a similar one and targeted a similar audience.

🏵You have had a minimal or no gap in employment.

A chronological format should not be used when:

🏵You are just beginning your career journey, it can be tricky.

🏵You likely have an abundance of skills and experience that falls outside of actual paid work history that you can list

🏵You are trying to transition into a new industry sector or new role altogether.

🏵You have gaps in your work history or you have changed jobs frequently.
