PROFESSIONAL JOB TITLES FOR RESUME SUMMARIES AND TAGLINES

Several companies today have their own in-house proprietary designation names for different employee groups. Consider changing your prescribed title if you have ever held an organization-specific title. Change your title to something a recruiter can easily understand, reflecting the seniority of the position and your responsibilities.

Sometimes companies add on additional roles and responsibilities to your profile but don’t change your job title.

Most job seekers add their exact designation as a resume tag line or in the summary section. This is a grossly common error that is seen on most resumes. Your designation may say Software Analyst but you may actually be coding and be a Software Engineer. Some more examples:

? A company is hiring a “Finance Analyst” then you can just follow their lead and use this as your title, even if your current title says Finance Executive or Finance Associate.

?A job advertisement is asking for someone with five years of client service experience. You worked as a “Customer Support Agent”. Then, to make sure you appeal to the ATS and recruiters, you may wish to change your professional title to “Client Service Agent”

You should keep in mind that this will be the first thing someone will see when reading your resume. It must therefore be what they are looking for. The easiest way to ensure that you are giving recruiters and ATSs what they want is to match your professional title with that of the prospective job title as mentioned in the job posting.

If you choose to use a title other than the one provided by the employer, be sure to use industry-related terms you are sure recruiters will be familiar with.In addition to showing recruiters you understand their needs with such language, the ATS will recognize these keywords as keywords, helping you pass an initial auto screening.

The other area where you will need to write professional titles is for describing current or past work experience. Don’t rely simply on the titles your previous employers have given you. In certain circumstances, it might be necessary to edit them.
