USING ‘WIIFM’ ON YOUR RESUME
When writing a resume or cover letter, remember that the point is to convince the potential employer that you understand their organization’s challenges and possess the skills required to handle and resolve them. Your value lies in relieving their pain areas. That’s what employers who hire you expect from you – relief and solutions.
So, here’s what you should do:
Make a list of the challenges and concerns stated and implied in the job posting. Create a sentence using specific language from the job posting to show that you have focused on and understood this challenge.
Write an accompanying sentence showing how your experience and skill are aligned to that challenge.
Now repeat this for 2 or more challenges. It’s about building a compelling case and explaining how your history has prepared you to be a solution to the potential employer’s problems.

Most candidates make the critical mistake of failing to connect with the potential employer’s needs. They often go into interviews with a “me mindset”. All of their resumes and answers focus on who they are and what they can do. The employers don’t care about that. All they care about is what the candidates can do for them and how they will add value. Sadly, most people don’t understand this essential difference.
