?A group of scientists placed five monkeys in a cage. In the middle there was a ladder with bananas ?on top of the ladder. Every time a monkey went up the ladder, the scientists would spray & soak the monkeys with cold water. After some time, no monkey would dare try climbing the ladder regardless of the temptation.
The scientists then decided to substitute one monkey with a new monkey. The first thing this monkey tried to do was climb the ladder for the bananas and immediately the other monkey beat him up.
After several beatings, the new monkey learned not to climb the ladder even though he never knew why?
A second monkey was substituted, and the same thing repeated. And the first monkey also participated in beating up the second monkey. A third monkey was changed and the same incident repeated. Eventually the fourth and fifth also was replaced.
What was left was a group of 5 new monkeys that even though never received a cold shower, continue to beat up any monkey that tried to climb the ladder.
If it was possible that monkeys could speak and we ask them why they would beat up anyone climbing the ladder for the bananas, I bet they would say “I don’t know that’s how things are done around here” ?
And so, the next time you hear someone say “It’s always been done this way” remember this story & to think out of the box while applying for a job, especially when you know that the competition is fierce. Most talented & qualified applicants submit a cover letter and resume, but without a little chutzpah which generally gets lost in the pile.
