ADDRESSING EMPLOYMENT GAP QUESTIONS IN THE INTERVIEW

My last post dwelled into how to bridge the employment gap on your resume, and the poll on ‘What is the biggest issue employment gap candidates face?’ resulted in 217 votes as of today ( the poll is ongoing) 37% of the people said ‘Experience is overlooked’, 33% said ‘Getting offers with pay cuts’, 17% said ‘Outright rejection’ and 12% said ‘Getting a lower role’.

All the more reason why job seekers have to be extra vigilant while answering questions about their employment gap to employers during the interview. Even before they arise, anticipate these questions and prepare a reassuring response.  Here are a few tricky questions, reassurance & situations you must prepare for?

They may ask about:

What made you leave your last job?

What have you been doing during this gap?

Why haven’t you been hired yet?

They may check if:

Are your professional judgment skills good?

Are you having trouble committing?

Is it easy for you to get along with your co-workers?

Have your skills weakened?

Have your skills become outdated?

Are you worth hiring?

Do your references tell a different story?
