8 RESUME MYTHS THAT ARE HOLDING YOU BACK – PART 2/2

Continued from my earlier post

🦄 Myth 5 – You need a creative resume

While images, charts, and other graphics may look great to the human eye, resumes with embedded images become a garbled mess by the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). For instance, if you insert an image or chart to showcase your key skills or a cool graphic logo, an ATS machine scanner will be unable to read it &  this piece of information will be lost.

🦄  Myth 6 – Format Doesn’t Matter

There is no doubt that your resume content is the highlight, but neglecting the format would be a mistake. A recruiter goes through hundreds of resumes for every job, and they are used to a specific resume structure and section names that are easy to understand.

🦄Myth 7 – Send the Same Resume to Everyone

Sending out the same resume might save time, but it hurts your chances of being hired. For every job opening, it would be ideal if you could create a custom resume that is tailored to the company’s needs. Furthermore, you must update the list of your previous jobs and replace less relevant ones.

🦄 Myth 8 – Only paid work experience counts

The reality is that any experience whether it is paid or unpaid or voluntary can be valuable and added to the experience section of your resume. This is especially important if you are a fresh graduate, or if you have a gap. It’s important not only to include it if the role matches but also if the skills are transferrable.
